Posty Pulls Winter Forward as Temperatures Plunge, Slashing Outerwear Prices by Up to 95%

In fashion retail, the weather sets the season change before the calendar does. Early November is typically when transitional outerwear takes center stage. But when temperatures fall faster than expected, platforms face a choice: stick with the season plan they prepared, or bring deep-winter merchandise forward. Posty, the fashion platform for shoppers in their 40s and 50s operated by Kakao Style (CEO Seo Jung-hoon), chose the latter.

Posty said on the 4th that it is running a winter outerwear promotion through the 10th. According to the company, this time of year would normally be devoted to transitional outerwear, but with temperatures dropping sharply in recent days, it put together the promotion to meet demand for winter outerwear. In effect, the platform has reshuffled its merchandising priorities in response to the weather.

The lineup is built around brands with strong name recognition among middle-aged consumers. Posty is offering men's and women's winter outerwear from ZISHEN, PAT, MOJO, INDIAN, BASSO HOMME and DENNIS GOLF, among others, at up to 95% off. The assortment spans deep-winter outerwear such as padded jackets, coats and shearling to outdoor jackets and vests. Notably, the event targets both men and women and brings city outerwear and outdoor wear together under a single promotion.

Pricing, too, is not skewed toward one end. The company said it is offering an even spread of price points to suit the varied tastes of middle-aged shoppers. Coats start in the ₩90,000 range, while padded jackets start below ₩30,000. On top of that, coupons of up to 30% off are available depending on the item, which the company said further lowers the barrier to purchase.

The featured items show the price ladder in concrete terms. ZISHEN's goose down wave-quilted hooded jacket sells in the ₩50,000 range, while BASSO HOMME's men's mink fur synthetic leather Siberian goose down jacket is priced at around ₩150,000. Women's wear brand BESTI BELLI's handmade loose-fit half coat is under ₩100,000, and DENNIS GOLF's warm heat boa fleece padded jacket is under ₩30,000 in both men's and women's versions. The structure places entry-level items under ₩30,000 and higher-end pieces at around ₩150,000 within the same promotion.

So what change in behavior is the promotion aiming for? "We set up this promotion so that middle-aged customers can buy winter outerwear at reasonable prices through mobile shopping as the weather has suddenly turned cold," a Kakao Style official said. "We plan to continue running a variety of discount promotions on Posty, so we hope for your continued interest." Alongside price, the keyword the company emphasized is "mobile shopping" — a sign of its intent to channel the immediate demand created by the temperature shift into its mobile platform.

Posty's business background is worth considering in this context. Kakao Style officially launched in 2021 through the merger of Croquis and Kakao Commerce's style business division, and it operates ZIGZAG, which targets women in their teens through 30s, alongside Posty, aimed at middle-aged consumers aged 40 to 50 and above. Launched in 2021, Posty hosts fashion, beauty and luxury brands for middle-aged shoppers, and the company says it has recorded annual gross merchandise value of more than ₩100 billion, 2.2 million cumulative members and approximately 10 million cumulative app downloads. As for ZIGZAG, launched in 2015, the company said the share of daily active users (DAU) with a purchase history has surpassed 80%, and that it ranks first in transaction volume among women in their 20s and 30s.

What follows is the reporter's interpretation. The significance of this promotion appears to lie less in the discount rates themselves than in the timing call. In outerwear, a category where demand can surge suddenly with the weather, how quickly a platform can change its assortment depends on how fast it can work with its partner brands. That said, discount-driven promotions are effective at lifting short-term demand, but the more often they are repeated, the more they can erode expectations around full-price purchases, so balance is needed. If the company continues its discount promotions as it has indicated, the next challenge will be how to design reasons, beyond price benefits, for middle-aged customers to keep coming back to the mobile platform.
